- The Proper spelling for the characters' names are as follows
- Mark Cohen
- Roger Davis
- Mimi Marquez
- Tom Collins
- Angel Dumott Schunard
- Maureen Johnson
- Joanne Jefferson
- Benjamin "Benny" Coffin III
- The characters who have AIDS/HIV are Collins, Angel, Roger, Mimi and April, Roger's late girlfriend from the One Song Glory Flashbacks. With the exception of Angel, who dies from complications due to AIDS, it's unknown if the characters have HIV or full-blown AIDS.
- The characters who are homosexual include Collins, Angel, Joanne, and Maureen. Although, it is debatable if Maureen is a lesbian or bisexual.
- With the exception of Tracie Thoms and Rosario Dawson, all the members of the movie cast also were in the OBC. Fredi Walker, the original Joanne, felt she was too old to play the role, and Daphne Rubin-Vega, the original Mimi, was pregnant at the time of casting.
- It's never clearly stated how April died in the movie, but in the stage show, we're told that she slit her wrists after finding out she had HIV. In the movie commentary, it is mentioned that they filmed a scene where April was found in the bathtub, so it's safe to assume she died in the same way in the movie.
